Artist’s Statement
I am self taught and living in Co. Kilkenny. In my view paintings are portals to a mystical world, which is explored by the artist. Geometric forms are the tools and colour is the power source. My aim is to use these tools to guide the eye on a slow voyage of discovery.
Each painting begins as a framework that is developed to varying levels of complexity. Much planning and preparation precedes every piece. Colour is applied using a variety of media and techniques.
Some paintings are based on a theme of synchronisation, to capture the moment when the eyes focus on a new subject. Synchronisation occurs when attention moves from its habitual position to align with a new experience. Other paintings are constructed using a specific form, which is moved via a process of reduction and rotation. Current and ongoing work utilises techniques of translation and rotation. This involves moving forms by a combination of vertical, horizontal and rotating methods.
